IT Career Paths: Systems Analyst

Job Role:

Systems Analysts solve computer problems and apply computer technology to meet the individual needs of an organization. They also plan and develop new computer systems or devise ways to apply existing systems for business solutions.

Many Systems Analysts setup new computer systems, both the hardware and software, add new software applications to increase computer productivity. Others act as system developers or system architects, but most specialize in a specific type of system such as business systems, accounting systems, financial systems, or scientific systems.

They demonstrate both programming and systems analysis proficiency utilizing techniques such as:

  • data modeling  
  • information engineering
  • mathematical model building
  • sampling
  • cost accounting

Systems Analysts typically work with a specific type of system: business, accounting or financial systems, or specific scientific and engineering systems.

They also:

  • manage projects
  • prepare cost-benefit and return-on-investment analysis
  • serve as a technical resource to marketing and sales staff
  • act as team members in developing solutions
  • have excellent interpersonal skills and business awareness

Recommended Education:

  • Associate's Degree, practical experience
  • Bachelor's Degree in computer science or information systems
  • Technical certifications

What to Expect:

According to the Bureau of Labor and Statistics, employment of Computer Systems Analysts is expected to grow by 29 percent from 2006 to 2016, which is much faster than the average for all occupations. In addition, the 146,000 new jobs that are expected to arise over the projections decade will be substantial. Demand for these workers will increase as organizations continue to adopt and integrate increasingly sophisticated technologies. Those who are proficient in both programming and analysis and enhance their skills with further education and elearning will maintain a competitive edge for progress in their career field.
